Teach in the Middle East

Looking for hands-on language experience after graduation? Check out teachanywhere.com for information on teaching positions in the Middle East.

Teachanywhere is staffed by mainly ex-teachers who have international experience themselves. We care greatly about our teachers and client schools, striving to make the best matches possible.

With our main office in London, UK, we have offices around the world including Dubai, Australia, New Zealand, North America, Europe and South Africa. We visit as many schools as possible, but the world being as big and changeable as it is, we cannot visit them all.

Teachanywhere will gather the relevant information about you, your education, work history, personal status, take references, verify credentials, and match you to jobs abroad. We take into account the ever-changing requirements of foreign Ministries of Education, preferences of schools and benefits packages against your needs and preferences when making recommended matches. We provide you with inside information about the matching schools and often have a direct line to the head teacher/principal of the school to get your CV noticed. Once the contracts are signed after a successful interview, the school will manage the transition and visa process and whilst our job is then done, we also gather feedback from teachers once they have arrived to facilitate future matches. We are proud of the work we do and the quality of our matching process, which is why teachers come back to us for a second, third, and even fourth assignment.

Teachanywhere helps to screen and match teachers to international teaching posts. We do not employ teachers - we provide a qualified introduction to a school or international organisation and facilitate the placement process. Your contract will be with the school, and as such, you should make sure to research your choice fully. We try to provide as much information as possible, but we cannot know you as well as you know yourself. We find that an open-minded, adventurous, adaptable and proactive teacher is our best candidate.

Assignment: How I spent my summer vacation

Dear chairs, directors and assistants,

I am working on a piece called “Assignment: How I spent my summer vacation,” which will be a photo essay pitched to prospective undergraduates, to show some of the great IU programs in which College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students can participate. Here’s where I need your help. If you or someone in your department is leading such a program, please consider documenting the program with high resolution photos and sending them to me for use in this piece. Here is an example: Michael Hamburger’s G188 2nd-8-weeks class from the spring semester is spending two weeks on a field trip in the Sierra Nevada. Pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/sierra.volcano.2010. Ideally, the pictures you submit will be of high enough resolution for use in a print piece.

So…. Summer in Florence, learning art history and Italian? Pictures, please!

Summer in an on-campus language immersion program? Or working in a Biology, Chemistry, Physics lab? Let me know and I will come and take some pictures.

Hello, Judson Meade Geologic Field Station! Pictures of this year’s students, please?

Overseas Study in Beijing? Quito? St. Petersburg? Jerusalem? Cairo?

Archeological Field station in Montana and Wyoming… anyone have a camera out there?

Please forward this request as appropriate. Many, many thanks for your help with this. Have a great summer.

Bridget's Spring 2010 Semester in Israel

My name is Bridget Trent and I am studying for the Spring 2010 semester in Jerusalem at Hebrew University. I am studying through a co-sponsored program through IU and Hebrew University's Rothberg International School. I study International Studies with an emphasis on the Middle East, Human Rights, and Social Movements. I am also studying Hebrew and Arabic, which leads to some funny mistakes. I stay in the Student Village near the Mt. Scopus Campus of Hebrew Univerisity in east Jerusalem. I would reccomend this program to students that want to learn about MANY different viewpoints of political situations in the Middle East.
On the weekends, I have visited Ramallah by taking an Egged bus to the Damascus Gate of the Old City, followed by bus #18 to the Qalandia Checkpoint in the northeastern outskirts of Jerusalem. Finally, I would be picked up or take a taxi closer to Ramallah where I would meet my friends who reside in the city.

Once at the Qalandia Checkpoint, I took pictures of the graffiti (Photos 2 & 3). It is quite interesting to observe graffiti from all over the world and the messages they portray. This checkpoint is one of the most imfamous in the area, known for it's long waits and tough questioning before allowing West Bank residents to pass through. It is situated on the main road between Ramallah and Jerusalem. I have also included a picture of grafitti from my trip to Bethlehem in Early March (Photo 1). I find it quite interesting how political dissent can be expressed in so many ways.
If you would like to learn more about this program please click here for more information on this IU Overseas Study Opportunity.

Today, over 23,000 students, from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, study on the University’s four campuses, including some 1,200 visitors from abroad and new immigrants, who have come to its Rothberg International School to pursue degrees or earn credits for transfer. The School has become an international arena, a magnet that attracts students from around the world. They converge here to find intellectual challenge, religious bonds, political analysis and cultural activity. In the hallways of the School you will hear English spoken in the accents of New York, New England and the Deep South, of Britain, Australia and South Africa. You will hear the sounds of Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Polish, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Korean and Japanese reverberate in the Rothberg International School. The Hebrew University brings all these students, from over 50 countries, together in Jerusalem to share a common experience in Hebrew – their new common language.
Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, is well known for its abundant historical and holy sites and fascinating tourist attractions. A city sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Jerusalem is a melding of past and present, of ancient roots and modern innovations. In addition, this thriving metropolis is rich in art galleries and museums, theaters and concert halls, restaurants and cafes, pubs and dance clubs. Exciting festivals, exhibitions, international conferences, sports competitions and many other special events are held throughout the year. PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Operating under the principle that language learning occurs best when instruction emphasizes full immersion, UW-Madison's Arabic and Persian Immersion Program employs a communicative approach that entails student-centered, performance-based, and context-oriented language teaching.

To meet the program goals of integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking with communication strategies and cultural skills, instructors and students sign a contract agreeing to use the target language exclusively within and outside the classroom. At the end of each level of instruction, students will demonstrate a) greater facility of communication; b) broader understanding of how to engage in the historical and socio-cultural contexts in which the target language is used; and c) expanded individual capabilities in learning how to adapt language skills for life-long learning.

America-Mideast Educational and Training Services

AMIDEAST (America-Mideast Educational and Training Services, a long-established US non-profit doing education and training work in the Middle East and North Africa) announced a new Honors Program in North African Studies run by its Education Abroad Programs in the Arab World. The program begins this coming fall semester and should be perfect for the kinds of students we all work with on our campuses who are interested in the Arab world. Here is the description:

The Honors Program in North African Studies combines semi-intensive Arabic language study with a research-, reading- and discussion-intensive approach under the guidance of Dr. Amal Rassam, professor emerita of anthropology at Queens College in New York.

Offered in collaboration with the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS), the Honors Program is intended for academically motivated students with a demonstrated interest in Middle East and North African studies who are prepared to undertake significant research. Participants must have completed at least one year of college-level Arabic, and preference in the admissions process will be given to students who also have some knowledge of French.
