This website mostly promotes the Syrian Arabic language coursebook, Syrian Colloquial Arabic, a functional course, by Mary-Jane Liddicoat, Richard Lennane and Dr Iman Abdul Rahim, which is only available online. Although, this website shouldn't be discounted as simply a tool to promote a book, as a large portion of the book is dedicated to Syria, and travel to / within.

Mango Languages Online Language Learning

Mango Languages currently has online courses in Turkish, Farsi, Hebrew, and several other languages, but they are also looking to expand into Arabic. If you are interested in working with Mango as an instructor of Levantine or Egyptian Arabic please contact Ms. Pamela Kendall at 248-254-7450 x848 or pamela.kendall@mangolanguage.com

"Mango Languages is a great substitute for the Rosetta Stone Language programs since Mango bases their prices on the size of the community in comparison to a projected number is users, which can be incredibly pricey [, also available for individual use]. Not only will teens have fun using this program, it will help them build self-esteem and teach them many things about a culture, which includes manners and how to present oneself when traveling abroad."

École Suisse de Langue Programs in Egypt, Morocco, and the UAE

ESL - Language Studies Abroad (note: ESL is for "École Suisse de Langue", not English as a Second Language), is a Swiss agency specialized in the planning of language study abroad for students, adults, professionals and children. Please note that we are not a regular travel agency, as we don't offer "vacation" packages: we are focused on long term (6-12 months) learning and studying in a foreign country. With a little fun on the side, of course...

Our Arabic language programs offer students the opportunity to live and learn in Egypt, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. We only work with renowned schools which we select with care, and language courses are often completed with cultural or sports activities, sometimes even by a paid job or volunteer work.

The prestigious Arabic language...a language course to discover it, to improve your skills in it? Whatever your motivations, your level of Arabic, the time you have at your disposal for this Arabic language course, we certainly have a "tailor-made" language course for you. For an intensive Arabic course of a month, for example, or for an entire year of Arabic language courses, our partner school in Cairo or Rabat will certainly offer a perfectly adapted solution to what you expect from a language course for studying Arabic.

STARTALK

DEADLINE April 22

For four years now NYU has been offering a successful teacher training workshop in Arabic and Persian under the auspices of the STARTALK program.  This year we have added Dari and Turkish.

Applicants to either program must be fluent speakers of both English and one of the subject languages— Arabic, Dari, Hindi, Persian, Turkish or Urdu. They should have at least a bachelor’s degree. It is expected that participants’ language proficiency is at the superior to native level on the ACTFL scale.
Those currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s degree program and planning to be teachers are also invited to apply.

The NYU STARTALK program offers two intensive teacher training workshops—one in Hindu and Urdu, the other in Arabic, Dari, Persian and Turkish. Supported by a STARTALK grant from the National Foreign Language Center, these courses are part of a larger, ongoing U.S. government
initiative to support increased training and education in “critical languages.”

These are intensive, ten-day residential workshops designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of current and prospective school, community, and college teachers of Arabic, Dari, Hindi, Persian, Turkish or Urdu. Participants learn the most up-to-date, standards-based teaching methodologies and are required to develop, observe, and critique classroom procedures, strategies, and teaching techniques. The programs include a cultural component in which participants learn how to use the resources available in the community environment. Classrooms are equipped with audio-visual equipment and classes are held on New York University's campus in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.

The programs were developed collaboratively by the NYU-SCPS Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting department, the NYU College of Arts and Science’s Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, and the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The curricula are based on a New York State-approved course, part of the regular curriculum of the Master’s program in Foreign Language Teaching at the Steinhardt School.

Givat Haviva the leading institute for Arabic learning in Israel

Intensive Arabic Program in Israel

Givat Haviva has been the leading institute for Arabic learning in Israel for over 60 years. As an institute whose overriding goal is to promote equality and acceptance for all ethnicities, nationalities and religions, Givat Haviva understands that language is often the main barrier between people and cultures. In recognition of this reality, we established the Intensive Arabic Semester - an intensive language and cultural immersion program in which our students learn over 500 hour of spoken Arabic over a five month period as well as volunteer on a regular basis in Arab communities. In addition, our students take part in courses on  that deal with Middle East, minority issues and Israel's history and role in the Near East and on the international stage.

Our next semester begins July 14, 2010 and ends on December 15, 2010 while the Winter program starts on January 15 and ends on the 15th of June.

We are now entering the third year of our Intensive Arabic Semester and would be happy to have your students involved in our efforts at peace building through language learning.

AMIDEAST/Egypt Study Abroad Updates

AMIDEAST is a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa.

Because of the revolution and deteriorating security situation, AMIDEAST/Egypt evacuated all of its students from the Cairo program on January 31 and successfully transferred virtually all of them to other AMIDEAST program locations in Rabat, Morocco, and Amman, Jordan.

Now we are planning for the reopening of the program here in the fall.  It should be a truly fascinating and opportune time for students to experience the “new Egypt” first hand.  Of course we continue to monitor the security situation very closely at all of our program sites in the region, and if conditions are not conducive to running the program here in the fall, we won’t.  The students who have been accepted for Cairo will be offered places in either Rabat or Amman (their choice, as was the case with the student evacuated in January).

FALL 2011 DEADLINE April 1

Check out the different programs offered on their website: http://www.amideast.org/abroad/programs

  • student centered
  • structured to maximize students'
    • acquisition of the Arabic language
    • development of knowledge of the host country and region
    • exposure to the host culture
    • development of intercultural sensitivity and global competence
  • overseen by an Academic Consortium consisting of U.S. colleges and universities that jointly provide quality assurance for the programs through ongoing review and periodic site visits to meet with students, faculty and program staff
  • large enough, in terms of student enrollment, to assure valuable discussion and diversity but not so large as to isolate students from the host society or become unwieldy and unmanageable

International Employment Opportunities

Immediate/March Start icluding short term/temp posts

Dubai- Grade 5 Teacher  Experienced teachers of at least two years are required for a well established international school located in the heart of Dubai. If you are seeking professional development, a cultural experience and an enviable lifestyle in the sun then this is the opportunity for you. The salary for a two year experienced teacher is about AED9000 (UK1500) tax free per month and the employment benefits include single furnished accommodation close to the beach and malls with full security, utility allowance, travel allowance, annual flights, medical insurance and a discount card for one of the beach hotels. All nationalities are welcome to apply as long as relevant experience is evident and you have the ability to differentiate work that reflects culture and language. Dubai is probably one of the most exciting places in the Middle East in which to live and work offering an array of social and sporting activities. (2, S / TC, 55)
Egypt - Year 3 Teacher and Two Whole School Cover Teachers Two year experienced teachers are needed for an established British curriculum school located on the outskirts of Cairo. For all Primary positions it is essential to have experience of the English and Wales National Curriculum (for immediate vacancies the school is more flexible and will consider short term teachers). Offering excellent facilties, a reputable teaching environment, professional development, a cultural experience, an annual salary in the range of UK15200-15700 and an employment package of shared accommodation (cheap supplement to go single), annual flights and medical insurance, this ticks all the boxes for teachers looking for a professional adventure in and out of the classroom. Although this is a family friendly school only teaching couples with up to two children will receive full benefits; if only one parent is a teacher then benefits only extend to 50%. There are no visa restrictions on age which is a unique selling point for the school. Salaries may not appear competitive but with a very low cost of living and one of the most exciting historical, archeological and diving adventures on your doorstop you would have to think twice about turning away from this unique opportunity.  Please note that the school will be conducting telephone/Skype interviews during March.  They will also be visiting London in April for face to face interviews on a proposed date to be confirmed. (2 / S, TC2, M2 / no age limit)

Abu Dhabi - Year 4 Teacher  Three year experienced primary teachers are needed for this recently opened school offering the National Curriculum for England and Wales to expatriate children in Abu Dhabi. The school is in a purpose built modern campus with top facilities and is well resourced. It is essential that teachers have up to date UK National Curriculum experience. Expectations are high and teachers need to be prepared for long and demanding but rewarding days and have shown a commitment to extra curricular activities. Cultural sensitivity is a must and teachers must recognise that many children have english as a second language.
Salary is approximately AED12500 / £2700 per month tax free and the employment package includes single occupancy furnished accommodation (or AED85000/per annum allowance), flights and medical insurance. All benefits are extended to spouse and up to 2 children including free accommodation. Abu Dhabi offers the best of both worlds combining Middle East culture with the dazzle of modern city life; a safe and secure location for families. (3, S, M2, TC2, 55)

Dubai - IB English / Humanities An experienced teacher of English and Humanities is required for an immediate position at a private english medium IB school located in Dubai. The school would prefer an IB background but understand that at this time this may not be possible and are more than happy to accept a good solid educator. This is a school serving a local community of children so applicants must be aware that this is not a typical western expatriate school and must be prepared to work in a multi-cultural and ESL environment; cultural sensitivity is a must. The post will suit a single applicant as the employment package does not cover a spouse or dependent children. The salary per month is tax fee and starts from AED9500 (GBP1625). Other benefits include single accommodation, annual flights and medical insurance. Dubai is one of the more popular expatriate locations in the Middle East. The school locality is a little out of the main city but is well serviced and a very attractive place in which to live and work. (2, S, 55)

Top school in Kuwait - Key Stage 2 Primary Teacher Two year experienced teachers preferably with knowledge and experience of the National Curriculum of England and Wales are required for a private english medium primary school for local children located in Kuwait. Teachers must be aware that this is not a typical western expatriate school and must be able and prepared to differentiate delivery on an english language basis, as well as being sensitive towards the local culture. This will suit single applicants.
Salary is about KD800 (GBP1780) tax free per month and shared accommodation, medical insurance and annual flights are offered. Kuwait is a popular expatriate country offering a vibrant and varied social life that is close and friendly; there are many activity groups and sports clubs. Saving potential is high which is always an attraction for those with financial commitments back home or those who are looking to use the country as a stepping stone to travel further afield to Africa and Asia during the longer school breaks. (2, S, 55)

Qatar - ICT with DT  Two year experienced teachers are needed for a private school offering an international curriculum to a mainly local population of students from kindergarten to 18 years. Challenge and reward awaits those who are willing to teach in an environment that is essentially ESL and culturally diverse and applicants should be aware that this is not a typically western expatriate school. The school is currently IB but there is now movement towards using the UK curriculum as a framework of study; the transition phase will be at least 18 months. Salary is offered on a tax free basis and is quoted at an average QAR10000 / GBP1726 / US$2745 per month (there is a comprehensive salary scale taking qualifications and experience into account) along with single occupancy on site furnished accommodation (with communal pool and gym), return annual flights and medical insurance. Other benefits include free tuition and flights for one dependent child, a baggage allowance, a utility bill allowance and an end of contract gratuity payment; the contract is for two years. The school will consider all native english speaking nationalities; it is essential that teachers have relevant experience and have adjusted expectations to match the school profile and its location. Qatar has now won the bid for the 2022 World Cup and though this seems a long time away it does reflect the country's increasing presence on the world stage hosting more and more international sporting events. It is becoming a more popular choice for expatriates who enjoy a cosmopolitan western lifestyle nicely balanced with the culture of the Middle East. Great shopping and beaches. Dubai is only 45 minutes away by air and many more Asian holiday hot spots await for school holiday exploration. (2, S / TC1 / M1, 55)

Abu Dhabi - Kindergarten Teacher  Two year experienced teachers are required for an international US curriculum school located on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi city. Catering for mainly local Emirati children teachers will need to demonstrate cultural tolerance. Academic standards and behaviour are very good in a school that is new and modern boasting excellent facilities. The school wants teachers that are passionate and hard working; nationality and curriculum knowledge are considered second but applicants must be native speakers of english. This is a family friendly school offering benefits of an employment package that extends to dependents of up to 2 children, including salary in the range of AED10400-17200 (US$2800-4700) tax free per month, a handsome AED132000-140000 (US$36000-40000) housing allowance per year, a AED40000 furniture allowance, a AED33000 education allowance per year for each child, medical insurance and annual return flights. Abu Dhabi is a cool place to live and work; compared to most cities it is quite small, cheap and easy to get around. Western amenities and local attractions mix well to provide a comfortable, safe, fun and cultural lifestyle beneath warm blue skies and a backdrop of superlative desert dune seas. (2, S/M2/TC2, 57)

Due to the accommodation offering and local education laws teachers need to be single (or married teaching couples) and females for Grade 4 and lower and certain secondary subjects. Challenge and reward awaits those who would like to engage with local students working in essentially an ESL environment where culturally senstivity is a must, differentiation is a necessity and creative independence and resilience is highly recommended.
With a salary range of AED7000-10000 / UK1174-1677/ US$1906-2723 tax free per month and shared accommodation, this may not be the top attractive position on our job board but it does offer opportunities for less experienced teachers looking for a foot hold on the experience ladder. And of course Dubai offers everything that an expatriate would want in a vibrant and cosmopolitan city.  (1, S, 45)

Kuwait - Reception and Primary teachers
Two year experienced teachers preferably with knowledge and experience of the National Curriculum of England and Wales are required for a private english medium primary school for local children located in Kuwait.
An-Najah National University in our International Summer work camp “Rays of Justice”

May 28th to June 11th , 2011.

This program has been designed to bring 40 individuals from around the world to Palestine in order to foster relationships, exchange skills and ideas, and progress cultural exchange in an academic setting.

Rays of justiceis one of Zajel's promising projects. This year it will offer the opportunity for international volunteers to attend carefully selected lectures by remarkable educators about different fields and issues, in addition to working with Palestinian university students and peers in different fields of professionally-needed skills.

The international summer camp will bring together people from around the world who are interested in experiencing the unique place and people in Palestine. Our goal is to host volunteers interested in the Middle East question, from above all, while Palestine may seem daunting, it is also a highly rewarding environment to study firsthand. We strongly encourage motivated and serious men and women to apply.

The daily program of the international summer camp consists of daily voluntary work at the campus delivered by international volunteers to local students on the topics mentioned in the link provided below. In return, the internationals will be involved in workshops that are administered by professors from our University on the Middle East issues that are of interest to them.
