Summer Arabic Program 2011 Yarmouk University Jordan

University of Virginia at the Yarmouk University of Jordan Summer Arabic Program

The University of Virginia-Yarmouk University Summer Arabic Program is an intensive, eight-week Program in Modern Standard Arabic, designed for undergraduate and graduate students currently pursuing a degree program. The Program focuses on all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition to the course in Modern Standard Arabic, all students will take a course in the Jordanian dialect. All courses will be taught in Arabic. Course instructors will be members of the Yarmouk University faculty, and students will receive transcripts from Yarmouk University upon successful completion of the program. Four levels of skill-based instruction will be provided.

DATES: for 2011 program will run Friday, June 10th through Wednesday, August 10th

Irbid, Jordan: location of the university.  About 22,000 students are enrolled at the university and the city has around 500,000 inhabitants.  90 kilometers northwest of Amman.  

Levels of Instruction
Lower Intermediate:
  • 4 hours of classroom instruction per day, 5 days a week and language lab: 8 credits
  • Jordanian Dialect/Conversation: 1 credit
  • Prerequisite: 1 year of college level Arabic or the equivalent
  • Specially prepared materials will be provided at Yarmouk University
Upper Intermediate
  • 3 hours of classroom instruction per day, 5 days a week and language lab: 6 credits
  • Jordanian Dialect/Conversation: 1 credit
  • Media Arabic: Optional (See ADVANCED below)
  • prerequisite: 2 years of college level Arabic or the equivalent
  • specially prepared materials will be provided at Yarmouk University
Advanced 
  • 3 hours of classroom instruction per day, 5 days a week and language lab: 6 credits
  • Jordanian Dialect/Conversation: 1 credit
  • Media Arabic (radio, television, newspapers, and magazines): 1 credit
  • prerequisite: 3 years of college level Arabic r the equivalent
  • specially prepared materials will be provided at Yarmouk University
PLACEMENT:
Placement test taken in Irbid and an interview to be conducted at the Yarmouk University upon arrival.  The number of years of college level Arabic or the equivalent will also be taken into consideration.

COST:
$6,300: this includes
  • round trip international transportation from New York-Amman-Irbid
  • tuition, fees, and room
  • 2 program sponsored educational excursions, transportation, hotel lodging, and entry fees into the archeological sites during the program sponsored trips
  • DOES NOT INCLUDE meals, health/accident insurance, incidentals, transportation between the student's home and Kennedy Airport, or Amman Airport exit fee
TRAVEL:
  • Program participants required to travel as a group to Jordan
  • Program makes the necessary international travel arrangements for the group
  • Participants will travel as a group for the 2 Program sponsored trips in Jordan
HOUSING
Students will be housed in Yarmouk University facilities, double and triple occupancy

ORIENTATION
Orientation session will be held Friday June 10, 2011 prior to departure.  The session is MANDATORY
