École Suisse de Langue Programs in Egypt, Morocco, and the UAE

ESL - Language Studies Abroad (note: ESL is for "École Suisse de Langue", not English as a Second Language), is a Swiss agency specialized in the planning of language study abroad for students, adults, professionals and children. Please note that we are not a regular travel agency, as we don't offer "vacation" packages: we are focused on long term (6-12 months) learning and studying in a foreign country. With a little fun on the side, of course...

Our Arabic language programs offer students the opportunity to live and learn in Egypt, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. We only work with renowned schools which we select with care, and language courses are often completed with cultural or sports activities, sometimes even by a paid job or volunteer work.

The prestigious Arabic language...a language course to discover it, to improve your skills in it? Whatever your motivations, your level of Arabic, the time you have at your disposal for this Arabic language course, we certainly have a "tailor-made" language course for you. For an intensive Arabic course of a month, for example, or for an entire year of Arabic language courses, our partner school in Cairo or Rabat will certainly offer a perfectly adapted solution to what you expect from a language course for studying Arabic.

AMIDEAST/Egypt Study Abroad Updates

AMIDEAST is a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa.

Because of the revolution and deteriorating security situation, AMIDEAST/Egypt evacuated all of its students from the Cairo program on January 31 and successfully transferred virtually all of them to other AMIDEAST program locations in Rabat, Morocco, and Amman, Jordan.

Now we are planning for the reopening of the program here in the fall.  It should be a truly fascinating and opportune time for students to experience the “new Egypt” first hand.  Of course we continue to monitor the security situation very closely at all of our program sites in the region, and if conditions are not conducive to running the program here in the fall, we won’t.  The students who have been accepted for Cairo will be offered places in either Rabat or Amman (their choice, as was the case with the student evacuated in January).

FALL 2011 DEADLINE April 1

Check out the different programs offered on their website: http://www.amideast.org/abroad/programs

    • development of intercultural sensitivity and global competence
  • overseen by an Academic Consortium consisting of U.S. colleges and universities that jointly provide quality assurance for the programs through ongoing review and periodic site visits to meet with students, faculty and program staff
  • large enough, in terms of student enrollment, to assure valuable discussion and diversity but not so large as to isolate students from the host society or become unwieldy and unmanageable

Arabeya Association

Intercultural Communications and Marketing at the Arabeya Association is a renowned Arabic language school located in the heart of Cairo, Egypt and with branches in Giza and Alexandria. Our school specializes in intensive Arabic language and cross-cultural exchange programs with a variety of universities and academic institutions across the world.
Offering a diverse body of Arabic language programs in both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the Arabeya Association also teaches courses on Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA), the most widely spoken dialect in the Arabic-speaking world. All instructors are native speakers of Arabic, and are required to possess an excellent command of English. Classes are small to allow for greater flexibility, and students are given a placement test upon arrival to ensure that they receive the proper level of instruction.

In addition to Arabic language classes, the school also offers its facilities for a wide variety of other academic pursuits, such as guest lectures and credited academic courses, taught by either members of your own faculty, if available, or by prominent Middle Eastern scholars from any of the academic institutions with whom we have a relationship, such as the American University in Cairo. Many universities and academic institutions have taken advantage of this attractive offer, such as Harvard, Columbia, New York, and Northeastern universities. While most of these courses tend to be focused on Middle Eastern or Islamic studies, courses in areas as diverse as photography and archaeology have been hosted at our facilities as well. More details about the specifics of their programs, alongside testimonials and references, can be found on our website at http://www.arabeya.org/ . The Arabeya Association is very flexible in what it has to offer, and is always willing and able to accommodate the needs of its students.

Outside of the classroom, the Arabeya Association offers a host of other activities and excursions to better introduce our students to the rich culture of ancient and modern Egypt. Greater Cairo alone offers a vast mosaic of opportunities for cultural immersion and interaction, and at the Arabeya Association, it is recognized how essential a component this is for a student's education and experiences in the Arabic language and Egyptian culture.

Adelaide Bryan: Adventures at American University of Cairo

Adelaide Bryan is a NELC student currently studying abroad in Cairo, Egypt. To document her unique adventures in the sand land, Addy has begun a regular blog posting that you can view at http://addytravel.wordpress.com/egypt/.

"Officially Adelaide, introduced as Addy, and this is my travel blog…
I am just days away from starting out on what will be incredible eight months in Egypt.  Over the summer I will be participating in a volunteer program though Marhaba (gomarhaba.org and I’m in Program 2).  Volunteers will,
"(T)each conversational English classes at Resala, a large development organization led by Egyptian youth. Resala offers a range of programs, including Arabic literacy classes, food and clothing distribution, courses for the blind, and orphanages for street children. Marhaba volunteers will teach young Egyptian adults who volunteer at the centers. Volunteers will work in pairs at different branches of the organization throughout Cairo.”
During the fall semester, I will attend the American University in Cairo (AUC) through Indiana University’s Egypt Study Abroad program.  My major at IU is Anthropology and Near Eastern Languages & Cultures (Arabic) with a possible Political Science minor, but that minor is still very much in the works. My goal in Egypt is to speak Arabic as much as possible, and to find out what it's like to be an international student.

On a very different note, but still very relevant, I am notoriously a bad speller. When in doubt, I sound it out, and have found this rarely works. Though I am going to try my best to keep spelling errors to a minimum, it is unlikely that I will be faultless. So, I can say they’re incorrect, they will at least always be creative if not at least phonetic."

For more stories, pictures and camels, please check out Addy's blog!

National Registration Center for Study Aborad

The Program

Complete Immersion Homestudy student programs are monitored by resident regional organizers. These regional organizers gauge the progress of each student and are on call to solve the slightest personal problem that any students might have. If for any reason the student wishes to change the teaching family no reasons need be given. It is sufficient to say 'I do not feel comfortable' or ' I do not feel happy'. In this way, the family will be swiftly changed with no embarrassment on either side, as all teachers know that sometimes there can be a clash of personalities through no fault of either student or teacher.

Homestudy Program

Study 15, 20 or 25 hours per week. Students are placed in homestays for lodging and for language training. One or two students live with a qualified language instructor and learn a language in the home. Students are completely immersed in the foreign language and can take between 15 and 25 hours of instruction per week. One excursion per week chosen by the tutor but without extra charge.

All teachers have the highest possible qualifications which ensure that they are professional, and above all trained to teach. Every single teacher holds a teaching certificate recognized by their own authorities or a University degree or equivalent accepted by the private sector.

Note: If two students are studying in the home, they must have similar language proficiency.

Homestudy + Activities Program

Study 15, 20 or 25 hours per week. The Homestudy + Activities Program is available for the same price of the Homestudy Program. In this program, the student receives fewer language lessons than the Homestudy Program, but the hours missed are replaced by an activities program. Activities may consist of excursions, sports or cultural activities with an adult member of the host family. The student is free to choose the activities that interest him/her in advance or may consult with the tutor about specific activities upon arrival.

The student must pay for all expenses, including all entrance fees & bus or train tickets for both him/herself and the tutor or member of the tutor's family accompanying him/her. Similarly, in the case of sports such as tennis, golf or horse riding, the student must pay for him/herself and the tutor or family member accompanying him/her.
